Caudipteryx by EWilloughby Caudipteryx by EWilloughby
Finally, the 8th of the 8 feathered dinosaur illustration for *Agahnim's and my evolution book. The rest of the series can be found here: Jinfengopteryx, Microraptor, Archaeopteryx, Velociraptor, Sinornithosaurus, Epidexipteryx, and Sinosauropteryx.

This is Caudipteryx zoui, a flightless, feathered, basal oviraptorosaur from the Yixian Formation of China. It's currently the oviraptorosaur with the best-preserved feathers. This dinosaur was around the size of a large turkey and is named after its rather impressive tail fan, the feathers of which are clearly preserved in its fossil.

Though not as birdlike as certain other dinosaurs, Caudipteryx did have pennaceous feathers on its arms, similar to modern birds.

Once again, thanks to *Agahnim for his tireless advice and critique as well as the Gondolendians for their help with anatomy.

Medium: Prismacolor pencils over watercolor on illustration board.

Nice to see a dinosaur reconstructed with a birdlike tail rather that the erroneous, heavy based lizard tail that is normal.

You know, now that you mention it, Caudipteryx kinda looks like a turkey. And awesome turkey however!

And those chicks are adorable cute!

I love the impressive detail you have given, especially for the feathers and the lighting on the ground. I like how you caught the detail of the feathers to match how the dinosaur looked based off of the fossilisation.

The chicks are very adorable and I liked the detail you've given them as well, and how they all fit to scale.

Excellent work my good friend :D

Great piece of art! :)

I'm wondering what the book will look like. Is it gonna be an encyclopedia or more like a scientific essay about evolution?

It’s going to be a collection of essays about the scientific case for evolution, with the goal of convincing creationists of it. The book’s longest and most detailed essay is one that I’ve written myself about the origin of birds, and Ferahgo’s illustrations are going to be part of my essay.

Sounds intriguing! I asked because I'm planing to do something similar and as much as I want to make something scientificly correct and in the same time interesting for people wanting to learn more about the dinosaurs, I'm not able to use serious scientific language because I still lack the needed knowledge. That's why I really like the idea of scientific essay. It's good way to put some personal thoughts between the facts. I would like to read your book in future. I'm sure it will be interesting reading. Just don't take your hope for convincing the creationists too high. I think there is high chance Homo sapience to became extinct before creationists accept evolution. They are, so arrogant and ignorant... pretty bad mix if you're asking me.

Convincing creationists of evolution is difficult, but it isn’t impossible if you know how to go about it. I have a lot of experience with this, and I’ve succeeded at it a few times.

The most recent time I accomplished this with one of them was around a year ago. I posted a DA journal entry about this when it happened, if you’re interested in reading it: [link]
