Jinfengopteryx by EWilloughby Jinfengopteryx by EWilloughby
Drawing of Jinfengopteryx elegans, a troodontid from the Qiaotou Formation of China. For the uninformed, it's a very small (55 cm long) feathered theropod related to Troodon. This animal's taxonomy is slightly uncertain - originally described as an archaeopterygid, it's now thought to belong to Troodontidae based on features like the enlarged second toe and specifics of the teeth.

This was done entirely in Prismacolor pencils. Lots of love to ~Agahnim for his masterful help and advice on the shading.

This was drawn for ~Agahnim's booklet-in-the-works on evolution to be explained to creationists, specifically intended for the section on how birds can be shown as descendants of dinosaurs.

I am rather proud of this.

Could this thing fly?

Probably not. Like many (but not all) troodontids, Jinfengopteryx had not-extremely-long arms and fairly long legs (which lacked long feathers) which indicates it may have led a mostly cursorial lifestyle. It probably could have clambered around in trees, but I doubt it would have been doing much gliding and definitely no powered flight.

Wow, this is very beautiful. The shading, the colors, all of it. I think I'd actually prefer this color penciled, rather than digital art. Instant Favorite! =)

If you press harder with the prismacolor pencils, you can get some exceptionally vibrant colors. I can tell you did it a bit light from the graininess. Still, it's a beautiful piece.

Such a little beauty :D This is the sort of drawing that should go in kids' dinosaur books instead of the loads of rubbish I've seen in some of them. I'm really not the one to comment on accuracy, but it does look a hundred times better than most of the restorations I saw in popular books.

With all those vivid colours, lights and shadows, big mushrooms, the perspective, it really looks like an image from a fairy tale to me. Really attractive.

I should probably say this on ~Agahnim's page, but since I'm here already, it's here I'll wish him good luck with that booklet. I'd really love to see some or all of it when it's finished. If possible, of course.

Ok, here's the thread where it got moved to on the new forum: [link] One thing to keep in mind, though, is that this was written in 2007 and the intro (and most of the other things about the book, for that matter) has "evolved" significantly since then into something much lengthier and more detailed. The most notable difference is that in 2007 we intended this project to be a non-profit "pamphlet" of information, but at this stage it's definitely a full-length, fully-illustrated book that will likely be taken up by a mainstream publisher.

Absolutely exquisite. I'd be interested to know what sort of characteristics the paper has (roughness etc.). I'll keep my own counsel as to whether creationists are willing to accept the concept of evolution at all but you're welcome to try.
