Microraptor gui by EWilloughby Microraptor gui by EWilloughby
NEWER RENDITION IS NOW HERE: [link]

I've been working on this thing for ages and it's finally finished. It's the second of a series of feathered dinosaur drawings for ~Agahnim's evolution booklet to refute the claims of the Kentucky creation museum. Here's the first in the series, Jinfengopteryx elegans.

Microraptor gui was a small dromaeosaurid dinosaur from the early Cretaceous of Liaoning, China. It is unique in that several of its described fossil specimens are preserved with a very distinct covering of feathers, including long flight feathers on its feet and hind legs. It probably used the combined effect of these four wings to glide or "parachute" short distances.

Microraptor's similarity to modern birds is rather striking in terms of morphology, which is why it's included in ~Agahnim's booklet section on feathered dinosaurs.

I have several people to thank for help with this picture, including the fine folks at Gondolend for their masterful anatomy critiques, especially *shartman but also ~dracontes, ~MattMart, Quilong for skeletal reference, and as always, ~Agahnim for his compositional and shading-related help. Much .

This was done in conté crayons, which are pastel-like chalks.

Simply perfect! Hope to see you do the Linheraptor soon! LOL Maybe you already have and I haven't gotten to it yet. Regardless, you are my favorite artist on DA. Sending you a huge smile for bringing so many to my face. :-P

You have great understanding of the use of colours. The environment of this image caught my attention immediately while browsing your gallery. I particularly like the details of the moss covered rocks and forward plantation, and the Microraptor Gui is beautifully imagined. From a distance this artwork looks like a photograph. Brilliant.

Really like this one, though the head should be level with the body unless it's getting ready to land.
I see im not the only one getting a headache while painting the background, actually ive spent more time painting foliage than dinosaurs.
Gorgeous atmosphere throughout

This is really awesome. I love the pose, and the shading especially. :D The background's awesome, as well. I suck at backgrounds. Lol. I'm trying to practice with them more, but I tend to get bored of coloring/drawing backgrounds really quickly. I have a few more drawings to post, but I just can't finish the backgrounds quickly, and that's why it's taking me so long to post them. =P

Thanks. :D Backgrounds are really difficult, and almost always take more effort than the main subject when I put any amount of effort into them. With practice they can really make a picture, though.

You can always upload your pics as-is if you don't want to do a background. Most of my uploads are sans-background. =p

Yeah...when I draw backgrounds, they tend to take longer to draw than the main subject, unless I just draw a simple background. (Which I end up doing much of the time.) =P

I'll probably end up doing that, since not many of my pics have backgrounds anyway. Lol.

I tend to post my eggs in three places: on my most recent DA journal, in my LiveJournal, and at a forum I frequent. You can also try the LJ community Dragonspam for posting your eggs also.

It seems a little less detailed than you normally go for, though..kind of reminds me of Aggie\'s art a little.
