Reflective Tricolored Heron by EWilloughby Reflective Tricolored Heron by EWilloughby

This tricolored heron, Egretta tricolor, pauses reflectively for a moment to contemplate the majesty of existence.

The tricolored heron is especially fun to watch while it hunts. Unlike related species and the larger but similar great blue heron, it is often much more energetic in its foraging, and will hop and dance about while it attempts to spear a fish or amphibian.

Thanks for posting this one, Emily. Coastal southern California is nowhere near their range. While we are near the intersection of a couple of flyways and see the great blues now and then, and seem to have a local population of snowy egrets, I don't think I've even seen this species even at the San Diego or Los Angeles zoos.

Gorgeous pose and composition! Tricolors are one of my favorites to watch as well, those and great blues.
